Frequently Asked Questions

How often are dogs transported to their new homes?
We transport dogs every 3–4 months, because each Freedom Ride is so much more than a trip, it’s a promise. Months of preparation go into every journey, from veterinary care and health certificates to carefully planning safe, gentle transport. We move slowly and intentionally, limiting each trip so every dog travels in comfort, security, and love. For dogs who have already endured so much, their journey home should be peaceful, safe, and filled with hope.

What is your policy if an adoption doesn't work out? Can a dog be returned or rehomed?
We understand that sometimes, despite everyone’s best intentions, an adoption may not be the right fit. If that happens, the dog must be returned to our care and cannot be rehomed without our approval.

Whenever possible, we ask that the adopter continue fostering the dog until a new, suitable home is found. Any costs related to transport or relocation would be the adopter’s responsibility. Return options may include professional transport, waiting for the next scheduled transport (typically every 3–4 months), or flying the dog back to Mexico.

Our priority is always the dog’s safety, stability, and well-being, and we’re here to support you through the process.

Is it possible to pick up my dog in person instead of using a transport?
Yes! Adopters are welcome to pick up their dog in person, either in Houston or in Mexico. Any travel, lodging, and related expenses would be the adopter’s responsibility. We’ll work closely with you to coordinate the pickup location and timing to ensure everything goes smoothly and your dog has a safe, stress-free transition home.

What's the best way to welcome a new dog into our home? Do you provide a training or transition guide?
Absolutely! We share helpful tips and easy-to-follow guidance to support a smooth transition, including decompression advice, daily routines, and how to handle introductions. The transport team we work with is also there at delivery to help introduce your new dog to your home, and to any resident dogs so those first moments stay calm and positive. We also offer some video resources on our website HERE.

Our goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and set both you and your new pup up for success from day one.

How long do dogs typically stay with a foster before being adopted?
There’s no set timeline, each dog stays in foster care until the right home comes along, whether that takes weeks, months, or longer. As a no-kill rescue, we’re committed to every dog for as long as it takes. Our focus is always on finding the best possible match and giving each dog the safety, stability, and time they need, rather than rushing the process.

Will my dog be fully vaccinated and come with medical records at the time of adoption?
Yes! All of our dogs are fully vetted and adopted out with complete medical records. This includes spay/neuter, full vaccinations (DHPPI, rabies, and bordetella), microchip, deworming, health testing, preventives for heartworm, ticks, and fleas, a health certificate, vaccination booklet, and a CDC Dog Import Permit.
