Adopting an animal is one of the most important decisions a family or individual can make. It is a decision that should not be made on a whim but after careful consideration of all the implications. If an adoption fails and the pet is returned, it is a loss in several ways. ADAC is based in Mexico and organizes adoptions both in that country and internationally. While most adoptions are successful, dogs are occasionally returned. This can be quite devastating because of all the hard work required to match an animal with an adoptive family, but the logistics are also complex. A recent return from the United States resulted in significant expense for ADAC. Between transportation fees and kennel costs, the agency spent $950 to bring a dog back to Saltillo. It is a huge financial hit that caused a month-long food shortage, delayed payments to vets and halted any new rescues. It also resulted in a change in ADAC's adoption policy. It now states that the adopter must support the charity by paying for transportation to rehome the pet in the event the pet needs to return to the charity. ADAC is now financially protected from more situations like this in the future. ADAC recognizes that integrating a new pet into a home can be very disruptive and stressful, especially if the animal is a rescue and may have been exposed to abuse and neglect. That's why ADAC offers free video resources to help you understand your new dog's behavior and strategies to help you communicate with him. These videos are found here. ADAC is pleased to report that the majority of adoptions are successful and that is why they continue to find homes for the 250,000 homeless dogs in Saltillo (according to the SSC Secretariat of Health of Coahuila, February, 2024). It is still a difficult path to success, but they are determined to help as many as possible. ADAC recently celebrated its 7th anniversary and received a beautiful video of current adopters with their new family members. It is motivation to keep going and create more success stories.
